Thrifty Art Thursday!

So today I'd like to share another papercraft, this time with magazines. As an artist I love buying all those awesome arty magazines showing glossy pages of beautiful artwork. Somerset Studio, Martha Stewart Living and Cloth Paper Scissors are a few of my faves. Do you guys have any other faves I should be checking out?

I'm chopping all these lovelies up today to make halloween bunting, and if you do too, make sure to check the backside so that you're not destroying some wonderful tutorial when you do.

First cut out the pages that go with the color scheme that you're looking for. Look for pages that are mostly picture and less writing. Then either using a paper cutter (OMG how I love mine) or using a sharp xacto knife and a straight edge cut them into triangle shapes.

Next I decorate them and unify the theme with potato carving polka dots!

I sew mine together, you could punch holes and thread them, but I like the added strength of sewing. You could use ribbon, or purchased bias tape, but I happened to have some old wired halloween ribbon that I cut in half and pleated. If you watch the video you'll see that originally I was planning to make tee-shirt yarn, and sew them with that, but the plan evolved as it was created!

Then I sewed it to the triangles next, keeping the wire on one side of the presser foot and the top of the triangle on the other.

As each piece of ribbon ran out I just overlapped the next piece and kept right on sewing:

and Voila! A halloween bunting:

Yay!

Also, if you get a chance, check out Elizabeth's amazing blog Altered Book Lover. She makes the most beautiful mixed media collages and book pages, and has some great tutorials, like how to make rust marked paper and fabric!
