Art Shrine: Ghosts from the Past

More images from my newest art shrine. This one is for my ancestors, my ghosts, echoes of homes and lives from across the ocean, that echo again here.

I'm having some technical problems with the shrine building materials. I would like to minimize toxic products in the creation of the shrine. I'd like to use beeswax but I'm worried that it would melt later on. I also don't know how I'm going to attach the fan to the top. I want to blend stark lines between the dark shrine and the white objects, somehow making them more ghostly. I still think beeswax is the best option out there. Anybody know anything about encaustic or using beeswax?

Eventually I want to hang the crystal attached to this little guy from the top of his niche and shorten the chain. The crystal is a lovely iridescent one.

  1. What about a screw with a hook to hang the crystal? How are you thinking of hanging it?

Love the fabric square...what kind of stitch is that?

  2. I love the idea of this shrine! It's coming along very nicely. I like the use of color on the top with the "ghostly" things inside. nancy

  3. That's a good idea with the crystal. I was also pondering gluing some sort of jewelry finding up and threading the chain through.

The fabric is actually part of a doily that I inherited from my father's mother. I believe it's called cutwork. You actually use the threads from the fabric by cutting the warp threads out and then using more thread to twine and tie the threads that are left. I've never actually tried it myself though!

  4. If you have a tiny hand held drill you could drill some holes and use string or thread to attach items,or thin wire.I like the little bottle,is it a perfume bottle, does it represent time in a bottle? Great piece.

  5. Wow... an art shrine! Why didn't I think of that? Did you post somewhere else about why you decided to do this and what inspired you? I would love to know. :)

  6. @Tammy: String and wire are some of my favorite ways to attach things. I will ponder that. It would probably be sturdier than glue. I like that idea of time in a bottle! I'm totally using that. Thanks! It was a perfume bottle BTW.

@Grey Catsidhe: I got started making them by reading a book called Creating Personal Shrines by Carol Owen. I don't use foamcore board like she does anymore, since I prefer to use found objects. Honestly I just start collecting weird stuff that I like and the story of the peice emerges as I work.

  7. Loving the shrine. I think the tiny holes and wire would give the best effect, be more permanent and lighter than glue in the long run.

Mostly I love seeing the process others go through when creating fun and interesting pieces of art.

    cheers!
