We have CHICKENS!
Can you tell I'm excited? We've been thinking about getting chickens for years, but it's finally happening. Our wonderful friend Martha hooked us up with a flock of 5 lovely ladies. We've been getting wonderful eggs from her for years now but we were ready for our own. Last weekend while my DH was building the coop, my youngest kept asking, "Are there chickens yet!?" like they would magically appear somehow once the structure was in place.
But now we do indeed have chickens so I'd like to share a little Chicken TV with you:
I LOVE chicken TV! You should make it a regular feature :o)
ReplyDeleteI wish your lovely ladies a happy and long life with you.
Now, someone told me you needed a cockerel to make the hens lay, but I don't think that is right because I collected eggs at our local farm when I was at school and I don't remember seeing any cockerels - can you shed any light on this?
Thanks! I'm so glad you liked it. :)
ReplyDeleteAs for needing a cockerel for eggs, that's not true. The hens will lay, no matter if they're fertilized or not. That's just what they do. You do need a rooster if you want chicks, but I don't have the room, nor the desire to have a rooster. Technically it's against the law in my town to have roosters anyway. Our hens are pullets still, which means they're full grown, but too young to lay eggs. Hopefully within the month we should be getting about an egg a day from each of our fine ladies.
