Turnip of Doom!

Just wanted to share this pic my DH snapped of me. I was weeding out the garden where the peas and early lettuce was, and I accidentally pulled up this bad boy, the largest turnip I've ever grown. Too bad it wasn't closer to our Ancestors celebration, I'd carve it up to scare the bad spirits away!

In other exciting news, our little urban farm will be expanding to include livestock by the end of the week. I don't have any photos yet, but we are working on getting a coop ready and should have our own little flock of chickens! I'm so excited! Yay for eggs! Yay for manure! Yay for entertaining my kids! While my husband was working on the coop, my youngest came to the door and shouted, "Are the chickens here yet?!"

  1. That is an amazing turnip! (I am envying the amount of greens...a whole proper *mess* of them!)
It always amazes me how many people don't know jack-o-lanterns were originally carved turnips.
Maybe next year with the help of the chickens?

    XXOO~~

  2. That is a superfantabulous turnip!! And the greenery that is attached to it is somewhat humungous too!!
Chooks! Ace! From anything I've read, children and chooks are a great combination...to say nothing of the eggs. I've dithered for yonks about getting hens, but two friends have hen farms and often give us the unsellable eggs so....
What I really want is a tortoise..do they lay anything????

  3. Thank you both! I love the idea of the chickens helping! I don't know if I would eat tortoise eggs, I think the idea of baby tortoises is too awesome.
